Thinking about therapy?

Starting the process of treatment for a mental health condition is a big step and it is important that you engage the right help for the best outcomes.

That's why, before we book you in for your first appointment, we go through a thorough process of ensuring this psychology practice is right for you and that you are ready to start treatment. We want you to make the most of your time and your sessions.

How do I start treatment?

We ask all new clients to complete a detailed intake form. This ensures the practice is right for you and we are prepared to meet you and your treatment needs.

Please read through these key points to ensure you have all the information to make an informed choice about booking with us.

Claire Barkhuizen Wellbeing practice will be right for you if:

  • You are requiring a mental health assessment.

  • You are experiencing mild-moderate depression, anxiety, stress-related or adjustment disorder as assessed by your GP.

  • You are a parent of young children (infant or toddler) and have a mental health problem.

  • You are needing help parenting/co-parenting.

  • You are requiring coaching to improve your communication.

  • You are requiring coaching to improve your lifestyle and wellbeing.

  • You need help managing stress and improving your performance and capacity interpersonally, at work, play and life.

  • You are interested in Telehealth sessions via Google Meet or Telephone.

  • You understand that you need to be actively involved for psychological treatment to work.

Are there any circumstances in which CBW wouldn't be the right place for me?

You may be better served by other services if:

  • You have a current or enduring psychotic illness or eating disorder

  • You have long-standing suicidal or homicidal ideation or suicide attempts without a current psychiatrist currently providing you care

  • You have current involvement with child protection and Family and Community Services without case management support

  • You have current excessive alcohol or other drug use without Drug & Alcohol service support

In these circumstances, we are unable to provide the special knowledge for treatment and follow-up care that will be best for your recovery.

Please note we do not provide Cognitive Assessments or formal assessments for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

We do not provide assessments for Court proceedings.

The waiting time for treatment depends on a number of factors, however in general can be between 2 to 3 weeks.

After completing a client intake form you will be contacted via email with instructions for the next steps for starting treatment. This includes providing a copy of your Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, and completing our Client Registration process.
